KMC Mining Corporation was established in 1949 as a contract road builder in southern Saskatchewan and Alberta. As Western Canada developed, KMC expanded its operations to include railroads, dams, mines and other major earthworks throughout Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Yukon and Northwest Territories. Since the 1970s, the Company’s primary focus has been the open pit mining industry. Mining involvement to date has included zinc (Yukon), coal (Alberta and British Columbia), gold (British Columbia), uranium (Saskatchewan) and diamonds (Northwest Territories). In recent years, KMC has been exclusively focused on the Canadian oil sands sector.

KMC has an extensive fleet comprised of well-maintained and cost-efficient heavy mining equipment and is a leader in developing and promoting a safe work place. The Company is an active member of the Partners in Risk Reduction program in partnership with WCB and has won multiple awards for its safety practices and track record.
Capabilities: KMC’s primary mining activities include:

  • Removal of muskeg and initial site grading for the initial development and construction of mining facilities.
  • Construction of dykes and ponds where water from oil sands slurry can be contained for sediment to settle.
  • Construction of roads used by haul trucks to move both oil sands ore and overburden.
  • Removal of overburden through the use of large trucks and shovels to expose the oil sands ore for subsequent mining.
  • Hauling of oil sands ore from the mine site to the processing facilities.
  • Removal of rejects from the processing facilities either to be placed back into the system or to be disposed of.
  • Hauling of muskeg and secondary material as part of the mine reclamation process.
